How this cricket schedule works

This page shows the big cricket coming up. The dark panel at the top is today: if there is a big match today, it sits in the middle with its start time. If not, it shows the next one. Under that, the coming matches run down a timeline, one day at a time.

The list fills itself. Once a day it checks a public sports database for new dates and changed start times and refreshes the page. A match drops off once it is over, and a Test match stays on the list for all five days.

Every time follows your device, so a day game in Mumbai, a day-night game in Adelaide and a Test at Lord’s all show in your own local time.

Formats and how long they last

FormatLengthGood to know
Test matchUp to five daysUsually about six hours of play a day
One-Day International50 overs a side, about eight hoursOften a day-night game
T2020 overs a side, about three and a half hoursInternationals and leagues like the IPL and the Big Bash

Which matches are on the list?

  • Internationals: Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20 internationals.
  • Big leagues: the Indian Premier League (spring) and the Big Bash League in Australia (December and January).

Games with England, Australia or India are marked as the big ones, and those also trigger the email alerts.

Start times around the world

Cricket is played across many time zones. Day games in India start in the morning or early afternoon local time, which is early morning UK time. Tests in Australia start mid-morning local time, which is late at night or early in the morning UK time. Matches in England start in the late morning. This cricket schedule shows every match in your own time zone so you do not have to work it out.

Quiet weeks

International cricket comes in series, so some weeks are busy and others are quiet. When there is no big match this week, the page shows the next one, even if it is a few weeks away. For the full international calendar, see the ICC fixtures page.

How a day of Test cricket runs

A day of Test cricket has three sessions of about two hours, with a 40-minute lunch break and a 20-minute tea break. The aim is 90 overs a day. Some Tests are day-night games with a pink ball, which start in the afternoon and finish under lights. On the cricket schedule above, a Test shows its first day and stays on the list until the fifth day is over.

One-day and T20 games

In a One-Day International each side bats for up to 50 overs, and in a T20 for up to 20 overs. Both start with a powerplay: the first 10 overs in a one-day game and the first 6 in a T20, when only two fielders may stand outside the inner circle. When rain shortens a one-day or T20 game, the umpires use the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to set a fair new target.

The big series and tournaments

  • The Ashes: England against Australia, usually a five-Test series.
  • Border-Gavaskar Trophy: India against Australia in Tests.
  • ICC events: the T20 World Cup, the Cricket World Cup (one-day), the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final.
  • Indian Premier League: ten teams, usually from late March to the end of May.
  • Big Bash League: eight Australian teams, from December into January.
  • The Hundred: England’s 100-ball competition in August.

Series and tournaments are what make the cricket schedule busy or quiet. When a big series starts, this page fills up; between series, it shows the next big match.

Following a series

Most international cricket is played in series between two countries: two to five Tests, or three to five one-day or T20 games. This cricket schedule lists each match on its own day, so you can see a whole series as it unfolds. The toss usually happens about 30 minutes before play starts, so it is worth tuning in a little early for the big games.

Cricket schedule: common questions

Is there cricket on today?

The top of this page shows it. If there is a big match today it sits there with its start time in your time zone. If not, the top shows the next big match.

What time does the cricket start?

Each card shows the start time for where you are. Start times depend on where the match is played, so a game in India or Australia can start very early in the morning UK time.

When is India’s next match?

India’s games are marked as big ones, so the next one shows at the top of the page or in the timeline under it.

Why does a Test match stay on the list for days?

A Test lasts up to five days. It stays on the list until the last day is over.

How often is the cricket schedule updated?

Once a day, every day. New series and changed start times reach this cricket schedule within a day.

Which time zone does the cricket schedule use?

Yours. The page reads your device’s time zone, so the cricket schedule shows UK time in London, India time in Mumbai and local time in Sydney.

Does the cricket schedule include women’s cricket?

Not yet. For now this cricket schedule covers men’s internationals, the IPL and the Big Bash.

Why is the cricket schedule quiet this week?

International cricket comes in series, with gaps between them. When nothing big is on this week, the cricket schedule shows the next big match, even if it is a few weeks away.

Can I get an email when a big match is on?

Yes. Use the alerts box: one email on the morning of a big match, and you can unsubscribe in one click.
