How this football tonight page works
This page answers one question fast: what football is on tonight, and when does it kick off? The dark panel at the top shows today. The biggest game left today is the match of the day, with the kick-off time on the centre spot, and the other big games sit in the cards below it. Under that, the rest of the week runs down a simple timeline, one day at a time.
The list fills itself. Once a day it checks a public sports database for new dates and moved kick-offs, keeps only the big games, and refreshes the page. When a match ends it drops off the list on its own, about two hours after kick-off, so football tonight always means the games that are still to come.
Every time on the page follows your device. Open it in London and you see UK time; open it in Toronto, Dubai or Sydney and the same matches show in your local time, with no maths needed.
Which matches count as big?
A full fixture list for every league would bury the games most people care about, so this page keeps to the big ones:
- England’s top flight: every Premier League game, all 20 clubs.
- European nights: Champions League and Europa League games with an English club, Celtic or Rangers, plus any game with one of Europe’s giants.
- Europe’s giants at home: league games with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter, AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Roma or Paris Saint-Germain.
- Scotland: Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
The match of the day is picked by size: a game between two of the biggest clubs, like El Clásico or a Champions League night between two giants, always goes to the top.
Usual kick-off times in the UK
Most weeks follow the same pattern, which helps when you plan football tonight or across the weekend. Matches move for TV and for European games, so always check the list above for the exact time.
| Day | Usual UK kick-offs | Typical games |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | 12:30, 15:00, 17:30, sometimes 20:00 | The main league round |
| Sunday | 14:00 and 16:30 | League games, often the biggest of the weekend |
| Monday and Friday | 20:00 | One league game each night |
| Tuesday and Wednesday | 17:45 and 20:00 | Champions League nights |
| Thursday | 17:45 and 20:00 | Europa League nights |
Spain, Italy, Germany and France play across the weekend too, with late games often starting between 19:45 and 20:00 UK time. That is why a Saturday or Sunday on this page can hold ten or more big games.
The competitions on this page
Premier League
Twenty clubs play each other home and away, 38 rounds and 380 games from August to May. Every game is on this page, because in the UK every game is big for someone.
Champions League and Europa League
Both now start with a league phase of 36 clubs, eight games each. The top eight go straight to the last 16, and the clubs from 9th to 24th play off for the other places. Champions League nights are Tuesdays and Wednesdays; Europa League nights are Thursdays.
LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1
Spain and Italy have 20 clubs each; Germany and France have 18. This page lists the games of their biggest clubs, which is where the title races and the famous derbies are.
Scottish Premiership
Twelve clubs, and the league splits into a top six and a bottom six after 33 rounds. Celtic and Rangers games are on the list, including every Old Firm derby.
Why kick-off times change
A date or time on this page can move. TV companies pick games for new slots a few weeks ahead, European ties push league games to Sunday or Monday, and bad weather or cup runs cause late changes. The page checks for changes every day, so a moved match moves here too. If something looks wrong, check again later in the day.
Match alerts by email
Do not want to check every day? Use the match alerts box above. Pick football (and any other sport), enter your email, and you get one short email on the morning of a big match day, with kick-off times in your own time zone. No other mail, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Watching from abroad? Times in your time zone
A 20:00 UK kick-off is 15:00 in New York for most of the season and early the next morning in Sydney. You do not need to work that out: the page does it for you. UK clocks go back one hour on the last Sunday of October and forward on the last Sunday of March, and the list allows for both.
If you are setting up a big screen for the weekend, our guides to IPTV in the UK and what IPTV is explain the basics. For official fixtures and results, the BBC Sport fixtures page is a good place to double-check a date.
Football tonight: common questions
What football is on tonight?
The top of this page shows it: the match of the day and the cards under it are tonight’s big games, with kick-off times in your time zone. If today’s big games are over, the top switches to the next big match.
What time is kick-off tonight?
Each card shows the kick-off time for where you are. In the UK, evening games usually start at 20:00, and Champions League and Europa League games at 17:45 or 20:00.
How often is this page updated?
Once a day, every day. Finished matches drop off on their own about two hours after kick-off.
Why is a match missing from the list?
This page only lists big games: every Premier League match, European nights with British clubs or Europe’s giants, the giants’ league games, and Celtic and Rangers. Smaller leagues and lower divisions are left out on purpose.
Can I get an email when a big match is on?
Yes. Use the match alerts box: one email on the morning of a big match day, and you can unsubscribe in one click.
